Ryze-led consortium wins £3 million in UK Government funding to provide hydrogen refuelling to construction sites

Funded by Department for Energy Security & Net Zero

We are delighted to announce the consortium led by us here at Ryze has won more than £3 million in government funding to develop mobile refuelling for construction sites.

The funding will be used to demonstrate new technologies in a real world setting at a working quarry site where a large quantity of construction machines will be on trial.

The construction industry has seen an increase in demand for sustainable construction practices and low carbon energy sources, with hydrogen seen as a leading alternative to diesel, especially in heavy duty industries where battery electric vehicles are unsuitable.

There has been considerable progress in developing hydrogen fuelled construction machinery by a number of global construction equipment firms, but a lack of suitable hydrogen refuelling infrastructure tailored to the challenging conditions of the construction industry risks restricting the adoption of hydrogen as a fuel.

The project led by us has been awarded £3,212,280.99 from the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero’s Red Diesel Replacement Programme.

The Red Diesel Replacement Programme is funded through the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, providing funding for projects developing low carbon alternatives to using red diesel in the construction, mining and quarrying sectors.

The Net Zero Innovation Portfolio provides funding for low carbon technologies and systems, to help enable the UK to end its contribution to climate change.

The scheme brings Ryze together with technology suppliers iGAS and Wrightbus and leading global construction firms Skanska, Mace Dragados, and Sizewell C, to develop and demonstrate a new suite of production-ready hydrogen refuelling equipment which is flexible to the needs of diverse construction sites.

Neil Isaacson, our Chief Executive, said: “Hydrogen is a promising alternative to diesel that can significantly reduce carbon emissions. The exhaust products of hydrogen combustion are also considerably cleaner than diesel-based alternatives.

“With hydrogen-fuelled vehicles likely to be widely available from 2025, there is an urgent need to develop a hydrogen supply chain and associated equipment that is mobile, flexible, and can provide hydrogen on demand at construction sites.

“This new refuelling equipment is essential to give hydrogen providers commercially viable solutions to supply hydrogen to construction sites. Demonstrating and proving these new technologies in real world situations will unlock the use of hydrogen as a fuel in the construction sector.”

The project will also support development and dissemination of standard operating procedures, site safety, equipment standardisation and hydrogen knowledge sharing. The project will deliver case study reports from project partners on the feasibility for hydrogen use on major construction sites from 2025.
