Consultation events are being held in September for local people to find out more about a proposed state-of the-art hydrogen production facility that is planned to deliver low carbon energy in Bradford. Hygen and N-Gen are working in partnership to deliver the Bradford Hydrogen Production Facility that could help achieve the decarbonisation equivalent of removing 1000 diesel buses a day, from West Yorkshire roads.
The main consultation event will be held at Ingus Hall, Kala Sangam, St Peters House, 1 Forster Square, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD1 4TY, between 3pm to 7pm on Tuesday 12 September 2023. An event specifically for local residents living close to the site is being held on Monday the 11 September.
A 3D render shows the proposed site plan for this state of the art hydrogen production facility, that could help achieve the decarbonisation equivalent of removing 1000 buses a day and put the city of Bradford on the map as a key UK player in the journey to net zero.
The location of the proposed hydrogen production facility is at the Northern Gas Networks Birkshall site on Peace Street, adjacent to Bowling Back Lane. Once built, it will include a production facility to generate hydrogen from low carbon energy sources, and a hydrogen and electric vehicle refuelling station for local buses and public and private sector fleets. The facility will potentially be the UK’s first ever dual energy Zero Emission refuelling station catering for Battery Electric and Hydrogen Electric vehicles.
Gareth Mills, Managing Director of N-Gen said: “This is a very exciting project for the City of Bradford, the wider community and area. Bradford Council declared a climate emergency in January 2019 and we believe this facility will have an important role in helping the area deliver its climate change ambitions, as well as breathing new life into the proposed site it will be located on.”
Andrew Newman, Managing Director of Hygen said: “According to our projections, around 30 jobs could be created during construction of the facility and once up and running, it will have capacity to generate approximately 16 tonnes of hydrogen per day – enough to power all the buses in Bradford. We welcome interest in the Bradford Hydrogen Production Facility and look forward to meeting people at the consultation events.”
As well as hosting consultation events, Hygen and N-Gen have launched a project website and produced an informative newsletter for local residents within the vicinity of the site. It is envisaged a planning application will be submitted to Bradford Council later in 2023, and if consented, construction could commence mid-2024, with the site becoming operational by 2025.
