New York is making another bold move to mitigate emissions and achieve its climate goals.

This time it’s with the construction of an electrolyser plant in Niagara Falls, and project leaders Linde are not hanging about.  The plant will be operational by 2023, and will produce green hydrogen on a commercial scale.

The Niagara Falls facility will will be powered purely by renewable energy from the Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station, and utilise existing infrastructure.

The hydrogen produced will be green in the truest sense, using existing infrastructure at the Niagara Falls site to distribute the hydrogen to their customers.

Chief Operating Officer and Executive Deputy Commissioner at Empire State Development, Kevin Younis, commented “Linde’s production of green hydrogen generated by hydroelectric power at Niagara Falls will help the company invest in and deploy technology of the future and continue to upskill its Niagara County workforce.

“By providing an emission-free fuel that can be used for hard-to-electrify industrial and other power needs, Linde’s project will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support the State’s climate goals, as well as fulfil the WNYREDC’s focus on innovation and sustainability in its tradeable sector of advanced manufacturing.”

$671,000 of tax credits have been offered by Empire State Development in a serious display of support for the project.  A Regional Council Capital fund grant of $250,000 has also been provided.

It’s enough to make other cities across the globe green with envy.
